Alameda County: The Center of Western Industry

At the vintage paper fair this weekend I also picked up a series of booklets published by the Alameda County Board of Supervisors in 1915 to encourage families and businesses to move here. The first one is about Alameda County as a center of industry. Oakland in particular, was a thriving city all the way through the second World War- I film I watched recently from the 1930's referred to it as "the Detroit of the west" (at the time of course Detroit was also thriving and known as the "Paris of the west."). It is also interesting to note that at this time, Los Angeles was not of much consequence- the movie industry was only in its beginning stages and when Americans thought of California, Oakland and San Francisco would have been the first places that came to mind.
